This paper provides a broad introduction to statistical practice and data analysis techniques. It aims to equip students with a basic understanding of statistics, such that they are able to employ appropriate methods of analysis in various circumstances. The techniques learnt are widely used in the sciences, social sciences, business and many other fields of study. Topics covered include collecting data, getting information from data, data manipulation, statistical inference, regression and analysis of categorical data.

Attendance Policy
Class attendance is expected. The course notes provided are not comprehensive, additional material will be covered in class. You are responsible for all material covered in class.

Expected Workload
Students should expect to spend a minimum of about 10 hours per week on this paper. This includes the 4 contact lecture hours mentioned above as well as the 1 hour tutorial.

Entry to this paper is granted to students who either have been accepted into the BSc programme in the School of Science & Engineering or who meet the requirements for admission to STAT121 Introduction to Statistical Methods. Students with weak Mathematics backgrounds are advised to take MATH168 Preparatory Mathematics before attempting STAT111.
