We wish to assess the support for the proposition that two items come from the same source against the alternative that they come from different sources. Multivariate measurements are made on two items in order to assess this. Data of this type can be analysed using a two-level multivariate random-effects model.

We illustrate the use of the analysis and its importance for the evaluation of scientific evidence in an actual criminal case.
