Statistics Fees Scholarship

Undergraduate Scholarship, Department of Statistics

The Scholarships will be known as the Statistics Fees Scholarships.

The Scholarship will have a value of up to $2,500 and will be credited directly to the tuition fees account of the successful applicants. It will not be refundable to recipients who withdraw from the degree for which they were awarded the scholarship. It will be the responsibility of the student to pay the balance of their fees.

Up to two Scholarships may be awarded per year.

The Statistics Fees Scholarship is open to applicants who are enrolling in the second or third year of study towards an undergraduate degree with a major in Statistics at the University of Waikato. Successful applicants will usually be intending to enrol in the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, although in exceptional circumstances the Selection Panel may consider applicants who are enrolling in a Statistics major through another School or Faculty.

The Scholarship should normally be taken up in the year in which it is offered. In exceptional circumstances, the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences may allow a candidate to defer their Scholarship for up to one year. Students wishing to defer their Scholarship must apply in writing to the Scholarships Office, and applications for deferment will be considered on a case by case basis.

In selecting the successful applicant(s), the Selection Panel will give preference to applicants of high academic calibre (based on 100 level, 200 level (if applicable) or equivalent results). Together with their completed application form, applicants must submit a copy of their tertiary 100 level results (and 200 level results if the applicant is currently a second year student), a one-page statement about their reasons for wishing to major in Statistics, and a reference from a Mathematics or Statistics academic staff member.

Candidates should normally be completing their first or second year of tertiary study in the year prior to taking up the Scholarship. Candidates not meeting these requirements will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Successful applicants will be offered the Scholarship on condition that they enrol fulltime in an appropriate programme of study in Semester A of the year of tenure.

All students wishing to be considered for the Statistics Fees Scholarships must apply on the official application form and submit this by 31 October of the year preceding the year of tenure.

The application closing date in 2013 for 2014 university enrolment is 31 October 2013. The expected application closing date next year will be in October 2014.

The application must be submitted to:
